“There goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was to play this game.” For admirers of the recent theatrical and, later, DVD version, of “The Natural” this is obviously A MUST. The tale of Roy Hobbs, a substantial young talent in the Ted Williams mode (they even section the same number - 9), struck down in his prime, and then, like a phoenix, reborn into athletic glory, is one of the classic American stories of all time, based on the gorgeous fresh by Bernard Malamud. This novel “Director’s Cleave” version is like revisiting a mammoth fairy sage from childhood and being given more - and often longer - scenes with some of your popular characters. Director Barry Levinson explains, in a video introduction to the film, the reasons for this unique edition: how the new film was somewhat rushed into theatres and how he and his editor (and others) wanted a noteworthy different first act to the film. And here it is: the original footage deepens and darkens and gradually brightens the film into a noteworthy more satisfying experience and serene does not diminish the impact of the unusual at all. In a word, PERFECT. The musical regain, by the gargantuan Randy Newman, perhaps a small too insistent in the novel film, cueing us to how we should feel, sneaks up on you more in this version and makes all the unbelievable moments in the film that advance later that grand more attractive. Also, Robert Redford’s performance as Roy Hobbs is immeasurably helped here: the current footage (often novel scenes with more footage added), even clear mercurial cuts, construct for a more layered, textured performance that gives us greater insights into this frightened, but friendly character - and prove how a once, gargantuan, guileless young ballplayer collected exists inside the older, careworn, but detached talented, man he has become. There are aesthetic moments restored here - often wordless - and some unusual scenes have been edited, so that even though there is additional footage, the current version only runs about six minutes longer than the modern. Personally, I felt all the performances benefited from the current version - Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Darren McGavin, Glenn End, Wilford Brimley, Richard Farnsworth, all doing blooming work here. And though my only quibble with the film was - and unexcited is - the somewhat stilted staging of some of the scenes (I would have liked to have seen more reactions from the ballplayers and coaches during games - sometimes they unprejudiced ogle blank even when watching something racy going on), this is clearly a Lawful classic - and the fresh version will only add to its glory. The additional special features include a wealth of information about the making of the film, and a graceful featurette on “The Mythology of The Natural.” Clearly this is why this film endures - and will for the next 100 years. It has a timeless feel, from the perfect performances, the proper direction, the determined care that was taken in the music, costumes, sets (the improbable scenes in the various ballparks), and, finally, to the record itself, so beautifully articulated by Glenn Close’s character later in the story: “I hold we have two lives: the one we learn with, and the one we live with after that.” This novel DVD “Director’s Prick” version drives this theme home with the precision of one of Roy Hobbs’s colossal home runs. It is a darker, more textured, but ultimately more illuminating experience (and perhaps even more challenging than the novel version) - and one of Barry Levinson’s finest achievements. I wish they had re-released it on the colossal cover first. But here it is in a beautifully packaged DVD (with a sizable, stale veil), worth every penny, and then some. A great slam!

I loved the Natural when it came out in 1984. The mythical quality of the epic, terrific acting by a perfect cast, gargantuan editing, and tremendous direction made this film one of my all time current sports movies.

So this year a fresh dvd version is being released that is being called the Director’s slash. Apparently there are 20 minutes of modern footage added in, but the editing results in a film that is only 6 minutes longer than the novel. The chief contrast between the two versions is that the backstory is relayed primarily through flashback from the “point to”, as Roy Hobbs returns to his childhood home after 16 years away. He retrieves “Wonder Boy”, then goes to Unusual York to open his career with the NY Knights.

The current version works okay, but I frankly preferred the unique. I preferred its slightly more deliberate pacing, and I don’t deem the unique scenes (primarily extended versions of already existing scenes) added any right value or perspective. Indeed, one scene in which Memo travels to meet Roy on the road actually detracted from the cohesion of the myth.

Bottom line: if you loved the fresh, you’ll like this one. It’s smooth basically the same film. I impartial don’t assume it needed any tinkering.

It’s better than the 1994 remake starring Kim Basinger and husband Alec Baldwin, but this 1972 thriller relies too heavily on the low-key star power of Steve McQUn and Ali MacGraw, and the stylish violence of director Sam Peckinpah, reduced here to a mechanical echo of his former glory. McQUn plays a bank robber whose wife (MacGraw) makes a deal with a Texas politician to have her husband released from prison in return for a percentage from their next big heist. But when the plan goes sour, the couple must flee to Mexico as fast as they can, with a variety of gun-wielding thugs on their trail. MacGraw was duly skewered at the time for her dubious acting ability, but the film still has a raw, unglamorous quality that lends a timeless spin to the familiar crooks-on-the-lam scenario. As always, Peckinpah rises to the occasion with some audacious scenes of action and suspense, including a memorable chase on a train that still grabs the viewer’s attention. Not a great film, but a must for McQUn and Peckinpah fans. –Jeff Shannon

A quite nicely assembled “international intrigu” heist picture from Hong Kong, Easy Money is a thinly disguised 1987 riff on The Thomas Crown Affair. It was one of the first films produced after martial arts star Michelle Yeoh (then Khan) became engaged to Dickson Poon, the tycoon who owned the D&B production company, and marked a conscious effort to soften her image. As a result, action-oriented Yeoh fanciers are likely to be disappointed: The kung fu goddess who had pounded whimpering males into goo in Yes, Madam and The Magnificent Warriors eschews kung fu and wears dazzling designer duds as an HK heiress who stages elaborate robberies for the sheer excitement of it. Narcoleptic George Lam, a matinee idol who was already on the wrong side of 40, plays an insurance investigator assigned to entrap the heiress and suppress any hint of scandal–only to become intoxicated by the dangerous thrills she arranges for them (auto racing, hang gliding, etc.). It’s lightweight fun, with picturesqu globetrotting locations from England to Greece, and a lot more erotic sophistication than most Hong Kong pictures ever dabble in. –David Chute
